about

The following is a recording of a live performance of Lucio Pozzi's performance lecture, "A Declaration in Patchameena", on the special occasion of the closing of Mark Zhang's MFA thesis exhibition, "Babble". "A Declaration in Patchameena" is not a "lecture" per se. It should not be heard through the canon of codified "sound poetries". It is, rather, an experiment, routinely conducted by Pozzi since it's inception in 1977, that considers an aged problem: Can meaning be shared via a language that lacks a shared system of signs? "Declaration" requires Pozzi to create a patchwork of inflections, loosely grounded by "Patchameena", a pseudo language constructed by Pozzi and his autistic brother for the sake of sharing something unique to their relationship. Ultimately, Patchameena is language reduced to "just sound". Tee Tree Trio was enlisted to act as an accessory to the improvised expression of Patchameena, acting in as Pozzi's non-lingual shadow.
At the conclusion of the 4 parts, we were instructed by Pozzi to "fade out at such a pace that the audience is unsure whether or not the performance is over". He told us that he would not bow, smile, or indicate in any way that the performance was over. But even he was astounded at the impasse that the audience found themselves at when this moment came. Even when 5 minutes had passed in silence, the attendees did not applaud, jeer, carry on, nor any such behavior signifying the conclusion of a performance. And yet, how could they, when this could scarcely be called a performance, but rather something between the margins of genuine communication and absurdity? It is a well documented practice within the sphere of improvised music that when a performer, or group of performers, has evidently reached a mutual agreement to stop making sound, that what should follow is a respectful - yet, brief- moment of silence—a space opened for the collective contemplation of what just happened. In the case of this particular incarnation of "A Declaration in Patchameena", the audience remained mum for the whole of 16 minutes and 51 seconds. We've decided to shorten this section, as the recording of this moment truly does not do it justice.
